Otago Country triumph over Canterbury
Never looked liked losing to longtime rivals
What a win by Otago Country.
They beat their rugby rivals
Canterbury Country by 37-18 after
leading 20-10 at half-time.
This was a big reversal of form, as
Otago had lost their two previous
encounters. To upset Canterbury
was the highlight for the Otago
Otago began well and with a
strong defence, kept Canterbury
at bay, then Otago scored two
tries, both converted to go out to
14-0 lead. Canterbury came back
to make it 14-10, then Matt Tetana
added two penalties forOtago
Country to lead 20-10 at half-time.
In the second spell it was
all Otago. They added three tries
to make the final score 37-18.
For Otago Country Stu Young had
a strong game at prop, while Blair
Van de Voort and Simon Grant
led the loose forwards expertly.
The two backs to stand out were
first five Matt Tehana who was
outstanding in all facets of his
play and centre Bill Maiono who
was always dangerous with the
ball in hand.
Otago Country last beat Canter-
bury in 2009 in Queenstown, and
also in 2008 in Christchurch.
Before that it was back in the
1980s. Otago now has a chance to
win the Trianagular trophy if
they can beat Southland Country
at Nightcaps on Saturday.
Otago Country 37 (Bill Maiono,
Simon Grant, Stu Young,Ben
Purvis, Josh Botting tries, Matt
Tetana three cons, two pen) beat
Canterbury Country 18 (Willie
McGoon 2 tries, Shannon Donald
one con, two pens) Halftime 20-10.
