your life as a daring adventure?
Then come along and let that blind woman
Julie Woods inspire you into action! Julie
will share with you two small words that took her
from the hospital waiting room in 1997 to climbing
to the top of the Eiffel Tower in Paris in 2009! Julie's
gone on to walk seven half marathons, visit her third
wonder of the world, write her own book and
even referee a game of nude touch rugby!
If you want Julie to help you achieve
your dreams too, then come along to
hear her speak.

Fitness crucial in sport
This time of the year can be very
hectic for our top athletes.
Winter sports are reaching
finals time in club competition
and representative teams are
preparing for their programme,
while secondary schools are
working towards tournaments
in various parts of New Zealand.
There is a real danger of athlete
burnout when individuals find
themselves in all three forms of
competition, as some are.
Coaches and managers need to
be aware of the demands on the
individual and the athlete also
needs to take responsibility for
The first thing an athlete needs
to consider is if they can give the
required commitment to each
team they find themselves in.
Once that decision has been
made, they then need to
organise their time and prepare
well. Stamina and core strength
will be two key components
athletes will be working on.
Primary school students across
the Clutha district will be
working on similar attributes
this term. Their programme is
exciting and varied.
Cross country isn't everyone's
cup of tea but most sports
require running and stamina.
Encourage your children to get
into it. You will notice their
energy levels increase as they
Gym sport is on the calendar
this term and I can't emphasise
enough how important gymnas-
tics is for a child's overall
Core strength, balance and
rotation are all fundamental to
most sports and Balclutha
Gymnastics Club is a well
organised, enthusiastic club
with great facilities.
They are holding a free work-
shop next Tuesday from 4pm to
5.30pm at the Cross Recreation
Golf also features in term 3 and
it is pleasing to see young ones
taking up this sport after an
extensive programme promot-
ing it in schools.
Tiny Carruthers is the regional sports co-
ordinator for the Clutha district. He can be

SouthWest success: SouthWest Otago's rugby schoolboys under-38kg squad tasted success at the recent Central
Otago junior tournament in Millers Flat. They won all three games, beating Central Otago, Metro Blue and Metro
Gold. Now SouthWest play the same three teams again on Sunday at the Otago trials in Milton from which an Otago
Country team will be selected. A final Otago Country tournament is to be held at Clutha Rugby Club on September
1, with all three schoolboy grades and colts rugby represented.
