Three teams battling
for semifinals spot
Heriot, Clutha secure
HERIOT maintained their lead in
the Southern Region Premier
rugby competition, with a 51-5
win over Crescent, in their
game played at Kaitangata.
Crescent played well for 40 minutes and
were only down 15-7 at halftime, but
Heriot scored straight after the beak, and
from there on, never looked back.
Heriot ran in nine tries, with Bill Maiono
at fullback, being the outstanding player.
He ran strongly and scored three
delightful tries. Number 8 Sean Tauti
was the best of the pack, and he scored
Crescent had 40 minutes where they
played extremely well, but then fell away,
and Heriot took control.
Clutha after being held 7-all at halftime,
moved the ball around in the second
spell, and the points came, as they beat
Clinton by 38-7.
Blake Korteweg at centre shone for
Clutha, making some big runs and
rewarded with three tries. The other
back to show out was first five, Rhys
Harrold, who scored two tries and landed
four conversions, for a personal total of
Clinton would have been pleased with
their effort, as the forwards matched the
Clutha pack, and gave a wonderful
At Owaka, the home team went down
narrowly to Lawrence by 17-12, after
Owaka had led 7-5 at halftime. For
Lawrence, Sam Young and Sam Cross
were the backs to standout, while in the
forwards, Stu Young, Dave Sanders and
Sam Smith kept the visitors on the front
Owaka, like Clinton, would have been
pleased with their effort. Owaka's
halfback, Quenton Gare was outstanding,
while in the forwards, Duncan Leslie and
Michael Berney had strong games.
Clutha Valley with a 24-10 lead at
halftime, hung on gamely to hold out
Toko by 35-22. Clutha Valley forwards
had control, and this led to halfback, Josh
Botting having a heyday with four tries.
Ashley McIlrea was another to shine in
the backs. In the forwards, Michael Blair
and Todd McCammon stood out.
Toko tried hard but could not pick up any
Saturday matches will be the last of the
round robin series, and the top four will
move into the semifinal stage. Heriot and
Clutha are certain to make the last four,
but three teams have a chance to claim
two spots. Toko and Clutha Valley have
40 points each, with Valley meeting
Heriot, while Clinton meet Toko. The
other team in with a chance is Lawrence,
back on 35 points, and they must win and
claim a bonus point if the are to make the

Out of my way: Heriot's Mike McHutchon tries to bust through a tackle in the premier rugby clash against Crescent. Heriot won 51-7.
