St John could do with
many more volunteers
The struggle to get volunteers
for St John has been acknow-
ledged by the top of the
St John chief executive Peter
Bradley had breakfast with
volunteers at the Balclutha
station last Friday during a
three-day trip around St John
facilities in Otago and South-

Auckland, joined St John New
Zealand in September 2012 from
the London Ambulance Service.
He said one of the biggest
challenges facing the service
was volunteer numbers.

ceremony in Balclutha recently.
About 50 people attended the
ceremony, where Commander
of the Order of St John Shirley
Hennessy presented awards.
Among the awards were three
second bars for 22 years service
and citations for work done in
the 2011 Canterbury Earthqua-

SHORT AND SHARP
The Balclutha Parents Centre is hosting a Kids
Extravaganza to celebrate 25 years of volunteering
and supporting local families from 10am till 2pm on
June 8 in the Balclutha War Memorial Hall. There will
be stalls with second-hand and new items for
children, a bouncy castle, colouring competition,
lucky dips and face painting. Entry is free, gold coin
donation for some activities. For more information or

The Kai Hall Market will be held on Sunday, June 9
from 10am to 2pm in the Kaitangata War Memorial
Hall. There will be children s clothes and toys,
knitwear, pottery, secondhand goods and more. The
Woollen Mill from Milton will bring their products. All

SHORT AND SHARP
The Balclutha Volunteer Fire Brigade will
hold a Quiz Night on June 15in the Balclutha
War Memorial Hall at 7.30pm. Entry is $30 a

The quiz is a fundraiser for the team to
attend the Australasian Championships.
Tapanui School will hold a Casino Night on
June 22 in the West Otago Community
Centre. Doors open at 7pm for a 7.30pm
start. $25 entry gives you $50,000
