Clutha take out champs
Fulltime with Norman Woods
Clutha Rugby Premier team
reached new heights when they
outclassed Lawrence last
Saturday by 73-10, after leading
21-10 at halftime.
The saying is ''If Clutha rugby is strong,
then Southern Rugby is on the rise'' and
was shown as Clutha demolished
previous champions Lawrence in
Clutha ran in 11 tries and ran straight
and hard at the opposition. Dave Laban
at second five was outstanding, scoring
21 points, which included three tries.
Another player to impress was halfback,
Cam Young, who led the backline well,
and he scored 22 points. In the forwards,
Dan Groen and Kurt Turnbull had strong
games. For Lawrence, it was a day to
forget, as Clutha were too strong and
powerful on the day.
Heriot remains the only other team
unbeaten, when they overran Clutha
Valley by 51-12, after leading 41-0 at
halftime. Using the wind to perfection in
the first 40, Heriot ran in 41 points, and
just cruised in the second to take a
valuable five-pointer, and at present are
second on the points table behind Clutha.
Heriot forwards dominated the day, led
by Dylan McKenzie, Craig Stanaway and
Ash Kinaston. Former Southland player,
Aaron Kimarau, was really impressive at
second five, while Jye Cormack gave
another sound display at halfback.
Clutha Valley have lost key players from
last season, so at present are just making
the numbers. Their turn will come again.
Toko showed they will be competitive,
when they scored 37-10 win over Clinton
at Milton. Toko scored six tries, with
number eight, Josh Beer having a superb
game. The forwards led the way, with the
eight playing as a unit and setting up
play for the backs which they did
effectively. Brad Frost, Dillon Mathieson
and Tony Ralulu were the stand-outs in
the backs, but the whole team under
captain Brendon Sheath, excelled as a
unit. Clinton tried hard, and their only
reward came from a Braden Pennycook
try. Number six Scott Belsham was the
standout man for Clinton.
At Owaka, Crescent scored their first win
of the season, when they held out Owaka
o win by 19-11, after leading 7-6 at
halftime. The first spell belonged to
Owaka who gave a gutsy opening 40
minutes, but Crescent came back in the
second half to score two further tries and
take the victory.
