SHORT AND SHARP
Telford tutor Ken Payne was the winner of
the Balclutha ward by-election. Mr Payne
received 1044 votes, ahead of Stewart
MacDonell, with 328 votes, and Darrell Craig-
Mackenzie, 214. 1591 votes were cast, which
represented a turnout of about 41.51 per cent.
Mr Payne will join Balclutha ward
representatives Crs Hamish Anderson, Ron
Davis and Mary Johnstone when he is sworn
in at the council meeting on October 18.
Milton Anglican Church Fair
The Milton Anglican Church will hold a fair on
Saturday at the Pipe Band Hall from 9.30 to
11.30am. There will be baking, jams and
delicatessen items, plus a good selection of
plants, books and other items for sale. There
will also be raffles for generous hampers.
South Otago Young Farmers raised $3425 for
the Cancer Society with their Young Farmers
Daffodil Day Quiz at the end of August.
Twenty-four teams faced a large range of
questions, at the Clinton Rugby Club. There
were raffles, and auction items included a
New World Hamper and half a processed pig.

Christmas cheer will be a little bit
bigger for the Clutha district this
The South Otago Festival Trust will
host a revamped Christmas Cele-
bration for Balclutha and the wider
district on December 1.
The celebration will include the
Clutha Country Christmas Market
(10am till 2pm), Can Cruise by Big
River Bikers (from 9am), Christmas
Parade (1pm till 2pm), and Christ-
mas entertainment (2pm till 4pm).
Event co-ordinator Jean Proctor said
the main event would be the new
Christmas Parade, which replaced
the usual Christmas Concert in the
Community groups, sporting groups,
business owners, schools, bands,
preschools, service providers and
individuals are encouraged to take

Following the parade there will be
entertainment in a closed off portion
of Elizabeth St, including magician

loonologist", Vickie Evans, Paige
Gardner and HC Band.
Businesses in the retail area will be
encouraged to decorate their prem-
ises in the Christmas spirit, with a
prize awarded for the best business.
There will also be trophies for first,
second and third in parade sections
of community group, business,
sports team and individual.
The trust hopes people taking part,
including parade participants, stall
holders and members of the com-
munity, will bring a canned food
contribution for the Clutha District
The Can Cruise will start in
Balclutha and go through Kai-
tangata, Clutha Valley and Clinton
before returning to Balclutha to
provide the finale in the parade and
deliver the canned donations to the
Salvation Army Clutha District Food
The 2011 Can Cruise brought in 1500
The aim is to at least double that this
